Biography
George Walter Poole, Panorama proprietor was the son of Richard Poole (c1785-1860) and brother of Charles Poole (1821-1877) and John Poole (1817-1889).
George Poole was a musician, who could often be found busking on the streets of England with his brother Charles.
George and Charles were spotted by Moses Gompertz who employed them to play music to accompany the scenes of his travelling Panorama show.
Charles and George worked their way up to become Gompertz’s business partners and run Gompertz’s panoramas during the 1850s and 1860s. They eventually founded their own company with Anthony Young, called Poole & Young.
George married Elizabeth Frances (Ellen) Shannon and by 1875 is described as Poole’s sole proprietor on their publicity bills.
George died in Cork, Ireland on 6 December 1877; just three months after his brother and lifelong business partner Charles and his wife became the sole proprietor of Poole & Young.
