Billy Pierrot and His Puppet, 4 August 1804
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. Pitt, dressed as Pierrot, walks (left to right) with a dancing step, displaying a puppet in the shape of G. B. Mainwaring. He holds it up, pulling a string which moves its arms and legs. He says: "Here he is Gentlemen, a Chip of the Old Block One of my own Manufactory. Here you go up up up, And then you go down down downee." The puppet squints violently. Pitt wears a large election favour in his hat. On the ground behind him is a paper: and a begging we will go will go will go and a begging we will go. In the background a procession of four coaches drives (left to right) past a large signpost: 'To Brentford'. They are inscribed [1] 'Compelled by the Contractors'; the occupants say "it's all against the grain". [2] 'Comanded by the Treasury'. [3] 'Under the Influence of the Excise'; they say: "We are obliged to go aginst the grain." [4] 'Threatened by the Majestrates'; they say: "I am obliged to go against my Conscience or lose my Licence." Description from the British Museum.
