Billy the State Coachman Leaving his Helpmates in the Lurch after Assisting him to Mount the Box, 18 May 1804
Scope and Contents
Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. Pitt drives a stage-coach, the coach of State, drawn (left to right) by six galloping horses; the leaders have reached a steep ascent, on which is a broken signpost: 'To the Land of Promise'. On the (empty) basket is a placard: 'The State Fly by W P - only the late Partnership being Dissolved'. Windham, Grenville, and Fox run after the coach, begging to be taken up. Pitt, without turning his head, but looking back out of the corner of his eye, flourishes his whip over their heads. He says: "Curse those Noisy fellows, how they keep bawling, I tell you there is no Room, the Coach is quite full Aye up! Aye up! War Horses." Windham holds an enormous bundle of papers: 'Studied Speeches for Killing off'; he says: "I say Coachey let us get into the Basket then." Grenville, slightly behind, has an empty sack over his shoulders: 'For Perqu[isi]tes'. Fox, lumbering behind, shouts: "Holloa there, Coachey you have forgot you was to take us up, you know I have taken my place some time since and was promised to ride on the Box." On the roof of the coach sits Melville in Highland dress, as the guard, pointing a small cannon at Fox, and putting a match to the touch-hole. He says: "Keep off or I'll let fly at you, what you want to rob the Coach." Huge bundles of papers on the roof are inscribed: 'Ways & Means', 'Secret Expeditions', 'Ways & Means', 'Secret Expeditions'. The coach-door is inscribed 'Bella! Horrida Bell[a]'; on the panel is a crown above the initials 'W. P.' Four heads, grinning with satisfaction, look from the window at the runners. Two have some resemblance to Castlereagh and Hawkesbury; the others may be Eldon and Portland. Description from the British Museum.
