An Old Fox Caught at Last, 29 March 1804
Scope and Contents
Artist: Isaac Cruikshank. Published: S. W. Fores. Fox grovels on hands and knees inside a rectangular trap: 'New Opposition Trap'. The sliding door (left) through which he has entered is not yet quite shut. He opens his mouth to bite at the bait inside the trap (right): a bunch of grapes, and substances inscribed 'Venison Champaign', 'Carlisle Bait'. Men on the left watch intently, while Windham (right) stoops to listen to sounds from the trap, raising a monitory finger, and saying: "Be quiet I hear him nibbling I used to nibble myself - when I was in the Cheese paring line!". All, except Fox, are poorly characterized. Of the five men on the left, one holds a basket of 'Carlisle Cakes', showing that he is Lord Carlisle; he puts his finger to his nose and looks knowingly at a stout man wearing a ribbon who is presumably the Marquis of Buckingham. A third must be Grenville. The fourth, in profile to the right., resembles Sheridan. Description from the British Museum.
