Scope and Contents

Artist: Isaac Cruikshank. Published: S. W. Fores. Napoleon, enthroned, arrogantly devours papers inscribed: 'Address to the Deified Consul'. His semicircular dais is surrounded by seven abject Belgian notables, whose bowed heads are concealed by the dishes which they proffer. Napoleon has a huge fork in each hand; with one (right) he spears on its dish a paper inscribed: 'We Burn with desire to lick the Dust of your Deified Feet'; on the other he holds up: 'To the Grand Consular Deity'. The centre figure, a bishop, offers crossed keys with the paper: 'Acept the Keys of Heaven and Hell'. On his right. is a man wearing a long wig and a gown, whose paper is inscribed: 'The Idol of our Hearts Livers Lights Guts & Garbbage Souls & all.' The other three papers are: 'We Disolve with Submission'; 'Your mos abject slave Savior of France'; 'Act of Submission'. On the extreme left and right are hands holding out more dishes. Napoleon sits with one foot on a stool, wearing an enormous bicorne which almost conceals the back of his throne, and a sabre in an elaborate sheath. The throne is supported by gilt sphinxes and framed by pillars wreathed with oak-leaves. On each side stands a Mameluke with crossed arms holding cocked pistol and drawn sabre.
