John Bull Listening to the Quarrels of State Affairs, 1 May 1803
Scope and Contents
Artist: Thomas Rowlandson. Published: Ackermann. Napoleon, wearing a laced cocked hat and large sword, stands, dictating terms to the trembling Addington, who is on the extreme right in wig and gown; he puts a forefinger on the palm of his hand to enforce his words, saying: "And so, - if you do so, I do so!" Addington, with flexed knees and distressed stare, exclaims "Oh! - Oh!!" At a little distance, and on the extreme left, John Bull, an ugly 'cit', hands on knees, gapes at the pair, saying, "I declare my very wig, stands an [sic] end with Curiosity!! What can they be quareling about? O that I could but be let into the secret if I ax our gentleman concerning it, tis ten to one if he tells me the right story." Description from the British Museum.
