Correspondence with Rudolf Laban, 25 April 1949 - 18 January 1957
Scope and Contents
This is correspondence between Irene Champernowne and Rudolf Laban, as well as other Withymead staff and Laban and his staff. The correspodence reflects that from their initial meeting at a conference and through visits at Withymead, Irene Champernowne and Rudolf Laban developed a close relationship, with Laban talking of the 'mother and healer' in Irene, and how he was her 'friend and co-fighter'. They took a deep interest in each other's work, and Irene became an Associate Member of The Laban Art of Movement Guild. Includes discussions of arrangements of Laban's visit to Withymead, which was described as positive, Irene's wishes to incorporate the art of movement and art therapy through movement at Withymead. The correspondence reveal that Irene discussed 'the troubles at Withymead', with Laban suggesting that an art therapy centre was her only solution. Laban in turn discussed his own doubts with areas of his work. The letters also reveal it was also at times a strained relationship, with Irene convinced her letters to Laban were also read by Lisa Ullman. Letters also discuss working with Betty Meredith Jones. Some letters have been annotated by Irene; the red asterix may indicate letters she thought were of particular importance.
