Biographical / Historical
Irene Champernowne met Rudolf Laban at a conference in March 1949, and following this meeting was keen for him to visit Withymead to demonstrate and talk on his methods. Laban paid at least three visits to Withymead, starting 1 July 1949, and on one occasion staying ten days during which he gave individual sessions on movement to Withymead staff and visitors. Following his visit, Withymead secured one of Laban's trained teachers to conduct movement sessions. Laban and Champernowne worked together several times and were professionally and personally supportitve of one another until Laban's death in 1958. Irene was asked to act as an advisor to the Laban Art of Movement Centre in matters of psycho-therapeutic importance and was an Associate Member of The Laban Art of Movement Guild.
