Showmen's Mental Health Awareness Charity

 Organisation

Biography

The Showmen’s Mental Health Awareness Charity (SMHC) was founded on 22 January 2021 by Sheldon Chadwick and fellow showmen Bradley and Ryan. The charity was a direct response to the loss of a young showman to death by suicide and the lack of mental health provision and support in the community.

SMHC is run by people from within the Showmen and fairground community who aim at breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging understanding and positive action among its members.

Through social media, the charity played a crucial role in starting conversations on mental health within the community. This prompted many Showmen to come forward to share their stories and offer help and support.

Since its inception, the charity has grown from strength to strength, becoming registered as a Charity Incorporated Organisation in June 2021 and has built up a network of support with Samaritans Liverpool, NHS Cheethams, NHS Crumpsell and Anglia Ruskin University.
