Biography

The Crucible Theatre, also known simply as The Crucible, is a theatre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, which was built by M. J. Gleeson in 1971. It was designed by Tanya Moiseiwitsch and the architects were Renton Howard Wood Levin Architects. The Crucible replaced the Sheffield Playhouse (previously the Repertory Theatre) which was located in Townhead Street. The proceeds of the sale of The Playhouse in 1973 contributed to the Crucible's building costs. The theatre's name refers to crucible steel, which was developed in Sheffield in 1740 and drove the industrialisation of the city.

The Crucible is now part of the Sheffield Theatres complex with the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse (situated inside the Crucible) and the neighbouring Lyceum Theatre. The theatres are operated by Sheffield Theatres Trust Ltd.

The Crucible hosts regular theatrical performances and the annual World Snooker Championship, which has been held at the venue since 1977.
