Grayson East Asia Slide Collection
Scope and Contents
A collection of approximately 1,200 slides taken by Professor James Huntley Grayson during his time spent in East Asia.
The collection consists of around 1,100 colour and black and white slides taken during visits to Republic of Korea (South Korea), Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong between 1965 and 1973; and a further set of 70 slides recording a visit to Shenyang, China, in August 1985.

This collection is digitised and should initially be consulted online due to the fragile nature of glass slides. Requests to consult original slides in the reading room will be considered on a case by case basis.

Biographical / Historical
James Huntley Grayson is Emeritus Professor of Modern Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield. He was awarded a BA in Anthropology from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA, in 1966, an MA in Anthropology from Columbia University in 1968, and a PhD in the History of Religion from Edinburgh University in 1979.
He served as a Methodist missionary in Korea from 1971 to 1987, after which he returned to the UK as a Lecturer (later Senior Lecturer, Reader and Professor) in Korean Studies at the University of Sheffield until his retirement in 2009.
