Scope and Contents

Press cuttings and other material relating to David Blunkett's childhood, education and early political career. Includes newspaper articles concerning: a day trip to the seaside for children from Sheffield Blind School, [including photograph of David Blunkett, age 7]; letter to Mrs Blunkett from the Woman's Own magazine replying to Mrs Blunkett's complain about an article concerning sending children to boarding school, [early 1950s]; letter to Mrs Blunkett from Victor Martin concerning Blunkett being persuaded to join the Methodist church in Shrewsbury, 1964; the education of blind children (Blunkett's letter on the subject, published in the Sheffield Star) 1967; a visit by Sheffield Wednesday players to watch blind students from Albrighton Hall play football, organised by Blunkett, Shropshire Star, February 1967; his attendance at the Labour Party Young Socialists Conference in Scarborough, and his resolution concerning rights for the disabled, April 1969 (press cuttings and letter); winning a place at Sheffield University, the first fully blind person to do so on a equal terms with sighted students, July 1969; his engagement to Ruth Mitchell, July 1969; his attendance at university, including article relating to his guide dog Ruby, and fellow students assisting him by reading books onto tape, October 1969; the revival of Brightside Young Socialist group, including a photograph of Ruth Mitchell, nd [1969] plus a document about the Brightside Young Socialists entitled 'Why the Young Socialists? What are you committing yourself too?', 1969. Also includes a note giving permission for Blunkett to assist local preachers in the conduct of services within the Shrewsbury Circuit, July 1967, and the Sheffield Circuit, October 1967; letter from the East Midlands Gas Board concerning Blunkett's appointment as a shorthand audio typist, 1967; and a typescript copy on an untitled article concerning a solo trip to Malta undertaken by Blunkett in 1968.
