Letters sent to Blunkett on his resignation as Home Secretary, December 2004-May 2005
Scope and Contents
Letters and cards mainly sent in support of Blunkett in the run up to, and following, his resignation as Home Secretary in December 2004, including some replies from Blunkett. Letters are from friends, family, colleagues and members of the public. Blunkett received around 2500 supportive letters, messages and voicemails during this period (see also 467/19/1/2/4 for messages of support read onto tape, and voicemails). The majority of the letters were sent in December 2004 and January 2005, and replies from Blunkett's office date from December 2004 to May 2005.
467/1/7/8/1: letters originally in one ring binder separated into sections [by Blunkett's secretarial staff] with the following titles: 'Friends'; 'VIPs'; 'People with a connection to David'; 'People connected with Sheffield'; 'Home Office'; 'Education'; 'Journalists'; 'Police'; 'Lords'; 'Labour MPs'; 'Tories'.
467/1/7/8/2-4: The remaining letters came in three separate bundles from Blunkett's office and were arranged roughly in chronological order, and are mainly from members of the public.
467/1/7/8/5: a small number of letters and emails which are critical of Blunkett.
