Scope and Contents

Correspondence relating to the 1992 General Election on 9 April 1992, which the Labour Party was expected to win. Includes a set of identical letters sent by Blunkett to the chairs of local authority associations (such as AMA and ALA) concerning how the associations might act as intermediaries between the Department of the Environment and individual local authorities assuming a Labour win, March 1992; correspondence with Professor John Stewart, from the Institute of Local Government, concerning drawing up a reading list for Blunkett to give to civil servants at the Department of the Environment; letters labelled 'to be sent on Friday 10th - presuming we win!' containing congratulations on a Labour election win to send to Bryan Gould, John Smith, Jack Straw, Jack Cunningham and Jeff Rooker, including a draft paper written by Blunkett for those who would report to him within the Department of Environment, setting out priorities for legislation and including practical points on working arrangements. Also includes letters to local authority associations and trade unions after the Labour party's election defeat thanking them for their support during the election and in his role as Shadow Minister for Local Government and Inner Cities, and announcing his intention not to seek reappointment in the post in the forthcoming shadow cabinet elections, July 1992.
