Scope and Contents

Artist: Charles Williams. Published: S. W. Fores. A wooden platform is placed across two open boats on a rough sea; a dark sky with a waning moon and the sails of the boats form a background. From the platform Castlereagh has plunged head-first into the water, having dropped a document (partly submerged): 'State of Poll Col Meade 2338 Vi Ca . . .' Just behind him stands Pitt, making gestures of despair and apostrophizing the sky: "Ye have taken away Useful Harry [Melville] from me and will ye take the Drudging Viscount also? surely I shall be left alone to manage this great Nation." Beside him, a man leans forward to grasp Castlereagh's legs, saying, "Now for a Long pull at him", showing that he is Pitt's friend Long, a Lord of the Treasury. On Pitt's right stands a naval officer, saying, "No fear, If he is born to be hanged he will never be Drowned!!!" By Long stands an officer (Meade) holding up a bottle of Meade and his cocked hat, singing, "Down, Down Down Deny, Down". On the platform (left and right) are two kneeling sailors: one reaches for Castlereagh with a boat-hook, saying, "He has only made dive after a good plaice"; the other says: "Aye! Aye! he is a famous gudgeon catcher". Description from the British Museum.
