Administring to an Old Friend!! Or the rapid effects of Whitbreads Satire!, 25 April 1805
Scope and Contents
Artist: Isaac Cruikshank. Published: S. W. Fores. Melville sits on a stool, holding his forehead, and vomiting guineas into a cylinder (right) on the ground before him inscribed 'Naval Reservoir'. Pitt (left) bends towards him holding out a phial labelled 'Drop of Forgetfulness'; he says: "I am very my - my dear Friend to see you so poorly - do take a few of my drops - I have found them very serviceable on many occasions, - I am afraid you have brought on your Sickness by your high living! I confess I feel a little griped." Melville, who wears Highland dress, makes a gesture of rejection: "No No - its that Cursed Whitbreads porter!! another sic a dose would be the death o' me, and I fear it will mony a one beside!" On a table behind Pitt (left) is a gigantic tankard inscribed 'Whitbread Intire'. Description from the British Museum.
