A Warlike Minister, 18 April 1791
Scope and Contents
Created by William Dent. Former Prime Minister William Pitt hugs Russian Empress Catherine the Great, who looks bloodied and bruised after a fight. He says to her, "I'll do for your grey hairs" and she replies, "and I'll teach you how to handle a woman, you young dog, that I will indeed." Scene depicts a change in gender roles. This is highlighted by the comments made by three women to the right, dressed in antiquity/Roman dresses with spears and shields. From the far right they say: "Oh! Fie boy!... Is this the proper usage for the fair sex?", "By fasus, sister, he dont know how to use a woman", "Why he protest to cherish, but, alas, wantonly trampled upon me." At the bottom right, the text states: 'That master Bill dare talk and wrangle with man, from what has lately past * deny it none can; But that courage he lacks we think we are right, since with none but an old woman he dare fight".
