Miseries of Social Life, 9 April 1807
Miseries of Social Life, 9 April 1807

Scope and Contents

A hand-coloured print of a scene around a dining table where a large family meal is taking place. Many of the adults are plagued by children; one plays a drum as another blows a trumpet. One little boy drinks a cleric's wine as another child tugs on the pigtails of a man causing him to spill his drink. In the middle of the table, a man facing the viewer yawns voluminously. Verse underneath the design reads: 'After dinner with a favourite party when the cloth has been removed and the wine of conversation as well as the bottle is just beginning to brighten-seeing the door open and a string of staring/babies brought in and carried around to be caressed and admired during the rest of the sitting-an outrage from which there is not even a bye law or dead letter statute under our otherwise happy constitution that will afford you the smallest redress.' Inscribed in the plate: Rowlandson fecit 1807 / Pubd April 9 1807 by T Rowlandson N 1 James St Adelphi Description from the Royal Collection Trust.
