Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents about air raid alerts, 14 May 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess talks about the postman. She went to Villeparisis for Whit Sunday. They went to the cinema with Yolande. She liked the film but it is about the war and she wants to see nice and cheerful things. She had to walk across a wood to come home after taking the bus. She prefers the countryside to the city. She bought goldfish to her godfather but one of them died. She finds the dog annoying and repeats that she wouldn't let her own dog behave that way. Her room is full of flowers. There has been an air raid alert and shots fired, she got scared and got dressed. Her room was full of lights, she thinks it was rockets and anti-aircraft defence. The alert stopped at 1:15am. Another alert rang from 6:10 to 6:50. The police came in at 9am. They asked for her passport and asked her questions. She reveals that the Polish men have to go to a concentration camp. A new student has arrived at the boarding house, she wouldn't open the door to the police, when they did they found a man getting dressed very quickly - this has led to lots of gossip amongst the female residents of the boarding house. She was on her way to the hairdressers when she stopped in front of the theatre and went in instead, but at the beginning of the show, an alert rang, they had to evacuate, she was furious. She got arrested on her way home but was free to go back to her lodgings. She felt faint and dizzy, had a nap and woke up 5 hours later at 7pm. She writes again on Wednesday morning to thank her parents and to talk about her coat and new shoes.
