Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents about illness, newcomers at her boarding house and other day to day activities, [15] March 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess admits she had been very sick - head cold/nasopharyngitis, and a closed-eye, not sore, but she had to delay taking photographs for her parents. She says that her parents finds her ugly enough as it is, she will wait for her eye to be open again. She reveals four Polish people have arrived at the boarding house (a married couple, a tall married man, and small single man). They have no trouble communicating, as they speak French, English, and they can draw if necessary. She is a bit annoyed, as everybody wants her to marry the single man - he is a fabulous, intelligent, polite, well-mannered....She calls him 'baby rabbit'. She also met a Polish aviator (an older man, 49 years old), and was delighted and overwhelmed. He kissed her hand twice and was very polite with her. The commander is very jealous of both Polish men (the aviator and the single one), he keeps silent with Blaess, doesn't answer her, is not polite, except when she rebuffs the single Polish man. Her illness has now moved down on to her chest, it hurts when she coughs, she will have to buy syrup. She went to the theatre with friends. She didn't find the play too scary. She met with Dillis and her husband in a fashionable café. Dillis' mother is in bad health and is getting delirious so Dillis prefers to meet in public places without her. Blaess also mentions her coat: instead of buying it ready-made, she will have it made by a seamstress, which will be less expensive. She might also buy gloves and shoes.
