Letter from Madeleine Blaess to her parents abut her daily life, friendship and studies, 24 February 1940
Scope and Contents
Blaess updates her parents on the weather (spring-like). She attended a viva and thought it was terrible and must be miserable, and very long. She decided not to go to the opera that Sunday, but her Aunt demanded she goes with Yolande; so now she has to run to get tickets even though she doesn't want to go and is hoping there are no tickets left. She tells her parents about Mme Lecolletier: she really likes her and their Tuesday tea is becoming a weekly institution. Blaess is quite worried about her friend Norah: she and her boyfriend are almost certain to get married but she feels like this is a mistake. Indeed, she tells her parents about Norah's naivety and gullibility. Although Blaess is younger than her, Norah doesn't know anything about marriage, babies etc. Blaess is going to lend her some books about that because Norah keeps asking questions, and she is too embarrassed to talk about it. She says Norah has the brain of a 10 year-old and can't think properly on those questions. Cohen gave her more work and when Blaess protested he teased her saying she can do it and will do it to prove him wrong. Also, she adds that she now has to buy paper by the kilo. She went with Norah to have a snack in a 'historical' location, mentioned in Cyrano, which used to host Molière etc. She is sad for the commander because he suffers pain due to rheumatism and she can't really help him. She tells her parents about a lottery ticket she bought with Norah and the librarian. Apart from that, she asks her parents about their health, job etc.
