Scope and Contents
Material relating to James Montgomery's The Pelican Island, a long narrative poem published in 1827. The first edition copy of the book and accompanying illustrations belonged to John Holland Brammall (1831 - 1912) , nephew of John Holland. John Holland was a close friend of James Montgomery, and took over as editor of the Sheffield Iris from him in 1825. John Holland died at The Mount, Sheffield (which had been James Montgomery's home for the last 30 years of his life) in 1872 and his estate was left to his nephew.
