Book, Poems on the abolition of the slave trade, 1809
Scope and Contents
Book titled Poems on the abolition of the slave trade.
The book belonged to Mary Anne Rawson, with her book plate in the front reading 'MAR Wincobank Hall, near Sheffield'. There is a pencil note to Mary from George Bennet reading 'Miss Read will please to take care of this beautiful token of my valued friend’s kindness, until it may please God to permit me to have the happiness of seeing her again. Geo. Bennet. Highfield. March 20 1821. The verses and this were one present'.
George Bennet (1775 - 1841) was a close friend of James Montgomery, and together they founded the Sheffield Sunday School Union in 1812. The book was originally given to George Bennet by Montgomery; a note in ink on the title page reads 'To Mr. George Bennet, with the affectionate regards of his friend, J. Montgomery'.
Loose inside front boards is a black and white photograph, titled on verso in pencil: '? W. Wilberforce'.
A digitised copy of the book is available on the Internet Archive (University of California).
