Custodial History

A note in Scrapbook '19/1/4' reads: 'On the death of Mrs. Rawson her nephew John Wycliffe Wilson inherited this book. from here it has passed to his son Talbot E.B. Wilson and then to a grandson'.

According to Dr. Eric Mackerness, of the Department of English Literature at the University of Sheffield, says in his article ‘Mary Anne Rawson and the “Memorials of James Montgomery”’ (Transactions of the Hunter Archaeological Society, Vol. VIII, Part 4, 1962) that the Scrapbook in question was at that time in the possession of Ronald E. Wilson, who then donated 5 volumes and 1 box of Montgomery material to the University in 1964. It seems most likely that the items in this series were all presented by Ronald E. Wilson.

Wilson, who was a director of the Sheffield Smelting Company, was the great-great-great-grandson of John Read (1744-1803) who founded the company in 1760. Wilson was also a descendant of Mary Anne Rawson (granddaughter of John Read), and inherited the Montgomery memorabilia.
