Biographical / Historical
George Tucker lived at Portsmouth and worked in the local naval dockyard from the 1930s until the 1960s. He was a keen photographer of fairs and circuses along that part of the south coast of England. His photographs, which span four decades, are an important record of that area. Most of them he developed and, living in a house without electricity, printed himself by gaslight. He meticulously recorded in pencil on the reverse of each print the subject of the photograph and the details of where and when it had been taken, creating detailed documentary recordings of his work.
George corresponded with other fairground enthusiasts of his generation, including Philip Bradley and Rowland Scott.
His photographs relate mainly to fairs and showfamilies in the South and South East of the country and consist of general fairground shots and detailed photographs of fairground transport.
