Biography

Born in Devonport, he was apprenticed to a printer in his early life but relinquished the trade to begin acting. He made his debut at the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1837 as Shylock in the “Merchant of Venice.” He gained a reputation as being a leading man of his profession.
