Biography

Born in Prussia and brought to America at the age of six. He began acting after working as a cigar stripper, touring across America and England. Upon returning to the USA, he took up the ownership of Boston’s ‘Howard Athenaeum’. His success was so profound that he formed the Theatrical Syndicate along with six other prominent theatrical figures. At the time of his death, he controlled no fewer than six New York theatres. His sons, Henry B. (who died on the Titanic) and William Jr. were well known producers.
