Biography

Richard Miller was a fairground showman, descendent from the Miller family and related to the Mazelly-Miller family. Richard enlisted with the Royal Marines in 1910, aged 15 years old as a Boy Entrant. HE was trained as an oboe player and became a Royal Marine Bandsman.

Richard was stationed at Devonport and was posted to joing the orchestra on H.M.S. New Zealand. After a tour of the ship he was posted to join H.M.S. Monmouth also as a member of this ships orchestra.

Richard rejoined H.M.S. Monmouth at the outbreak of World War One. H.M.S. Monmouth was sank at the Sea Battle of Coronel on 1st November 1914 losing its entire crew of 734 men. Richard died ten days before his 19th birthday.
