Biography
Cetshwayo Kampande, also known in Europe as Cetawayo, Cetewayo, Cetywajo and Ketchwayo was the last Zulu King, born to King Mpande and Queen Ngqumbazi in c.1826.
Cetshwayo ascended to the throne on 1 September 1873 and remained King of the Zulus until 1879. During his reign he expanded his army and expulsed European missionaries from his land.
In 1878, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, British High Commissioner for the Cape Colony challenged Cetshwayo which started the Anglo-Zulu war in 1879, in spite of Cetshwayo attempts to avoid the conflict. On 4th July Cetshwayo was defeated and exiled to Cape Town and later London. He was eventually allowed to return to Zululand in 1883 where he died a year later.
