Biography

Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th Earl of Kincardine FSA Scot was a member of the royal house of Bruce, born 20 July 1766 in Fife.

He was a soldier, politician and diplomat, known primarily for the controversial procurement of the Parthenon marbles also known as the Elgin Marbles.

Elgin started his military career in 1785 and by 1814 he was promoted to Lieutenant General. He was elected as a Scottish Representative Peer in 1790, position that he retained until 1840.

From 1790 he as sent as a temporary envoy-extraordinary to Austria, Brussels and Prussia and in 1798 he was appointed as ambassador to The Porte in the Ottoman Empire, position he held until 1803.

Elgin died on 14 November 1841.
