Biography

Albert Howell was one of the most accomplished artists employed by Orton & Spooner.

Albert was born in Bristol in 1877 and became interested in art at a young age working with his father, who was an art restorer, picture framer and gilder. Albert graduated in art from Bristol’s Merchant Venturers’ Technical College in 1899 and soon after was working with artist William Spilsbury (c1832-1907).

One of Spilsbury’s main clients were fairground showmen, renowned for commissioning the most spectacular decorations for their equipment. Spilsbury trained Albert to paint popular fairground themes, including exuberant jungle scenes and wild animals. He excelled in this area, becoming one of the most sought-after artists in the sector.

Albert worked for Orton & Spooner from 1912 until the end of his career.
