Smart, Billy, Jnr (William), 1934 - 2005
Biography
Stanley Smart, better known by his showman name Billy Smart Jr. was the tenth child of Billy Smart. Stanley followed his father's footsteps into the family business, making his debut aged 12 with Billy Smart's New World Circus as an assistant ringmaster. As a child, he also performed with ponies and horses and later in life became better known for his elephant act.
Stanley together with his brothers, Ronald and David, took over management of the circus when their father died in 1966. The circus ceased touring in 1971, but televised performances continued until 1983.
The Smart Brothers also developed Guernsey Zoo, selling it in 1972, and opened Windsor Safari Park, now the site of Legloand Windsor, in 1969 before selling it in 1977.
Stanley's career as an animal trainer ended in 1978 after he lost sight in his right eye after having cosmetic surger.
The "Billy Smart's" touring circus was revived by his brother Ronald and nephew Gary in 1993, while Stanely developed a career as a property developer, based in Spain.
