Biography
Cirque du Soleil is a multi-award winning Canadian entertainment company and the largest and best known contemporary circus producer in the world.
Founded in 1984 by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix, Cirque du Soleil expanded rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s to become an international success. By the mid-2000s, 90% of the company had been sold to investment groups TPG Capital, Fosun Capital Group, and La Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and continued expanding its activities.
However, in 2020, having had to cancel all its shows due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cirque du Soleil filed for bankruptcy. Later that year the company was sold to Jim Murren and Canadian investment company Catalyst Capital, who have continued operating it.
