Biography
The Surrey Theatre started operating as the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy in 1782 in Blackfriars Road, London.
The Royal Circus was established by Charles Dibdin and Charles Hughes and it was used as a circus until 1806, when it burnt in a fire and was rebuilt as The Surrey theatre. Between 1814 and 1816 The Surrey became a circus again and in 1816 it reverted to the theatre. Between 1827 and 1901 the Surrey presented mainly theatre plays and between 1901 and 1920 it focused on music hall acts, after which it became a cinema.
The Surrey closed in 1924, and the building was demolished in 1934.
