Palace Theatre (1898 - 1955) (Attercliffe)
Biography
The Palace Theatre in Attercliffe, Sheffield opened on 3 January 1898 as the Alhambra Theatre of Varieties, operated by the MacNaghten Vaudeville Circuit. In 1904 it was renamed Attercliffe Palace Theatre and continued presenting a programme of variety and music hall acts. By 1909, as it became customary at the time, it incorporated moving pictures to its repertoire of entertainments and continued operating until 1911 when it changed its name once again to Palace of Varieties.
The Palace of Varieties survived World War One and continued operating although with declining audiences until 1930 when it closed for a comprehensive refurbishment and later that year reopened as a cinema.
Still true to its roots, the Palace continued presenting the occasional variety act from time to time until 1937. In 1937 The theatre’s business changed again from showing movies to presenting theatre plays. This continued throughout the following decade, until in 1955 it closed its doors for the last time. After becoming derelict the theatre was demolished in 1962.
