Biography

The Castleford, Theatre Royal was originally built as a salvation army barracks in the 1880s and only converted to a theatre ten years later.

The theatre offered the traditional combination of variety shows, plays and pantomimes. In 1938 a fire destroyed much of the interior of the theatre, which was rebuilt and reopened to continue operating until 1955, when the decline of the genre forced it to close. Despite several attempts to revive the theatre the following decades, it was eventually converted to a supermarket.
