Biography
The Alhambra Theatre in Devonport, was built on the site of several former Theatres in 1924. The first Theatre to open on this site was the Empire Theatre in 1894, renamed the Metropole Theatre two years later.
From 1912, as well as the traditional variety review the theatre obtained a cinema licence to show moving pictures and reinvented itself as the Palladium Theatre. Late it was renamed the Picturedrome and the Metropole (Picturdrome).
The Metropole didn’t become The New Alhambra Theatre until 1924, after being purchased by John Tellham and lavishly remodelled.
The Alhambra continued showing a combination of variety and moving pictures until the Second World War, when it was destroyed by enemy bombs on 22 April 1941.
