Biography
The Queen’s Theatre in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, was opened in 1934 in the original Picturedrome cinema building. The Picturedrome was opened on 1st April 1920. The building consisted of a cinema with a ballroom on the ground floor.
The cinema wasn’t very successful and it closed three years after opening. The building was then purchased by Cinevars Ltd. who continued to operate it until 1928.
In 1928 the building was turned into a billards hall and renamed Picturedrome Billards Hall and finally in 1934 it was converted to a theatre of variety after undergoing extensive renovations. The Queen's Theatre opened on 10 December 1934 with an changing programme of variety and pantomime shows, which it presented for the following five years. The success of The Queen's Theatre however was short lived and it closed in 1939. During the following decades the building was used as a dance school, restaurant, social club and nightclub, until it was demolished in 2010 and the site was turned into a car park.
